5 Reasons Why My Mom Is My Fitness Role Model

“God could not be everywhere, and therefore he created mothers." – Rudyard Kipling, English author

Two days ago, many of us celebrated our mothers. In today’s blog, I’ll pay homage to mine. A secret I’ve been keeping close to the vest for a long time is that my mom plays a huge role in these weekly blogs. I’ve had the honor of publishing an article each Tuesday for over a year now, and my mom deserves much of the credit. You see, I wasn’t used to writing prose when I began these blogs. I felt like I had something of value to say, but I often struggled to use correct grammar and structure the articles in a logical way.

Enter my mom. She’s always been interested in language, and is a published modern literatary criticism writer. Born and raised in Israel, she grew up speaking Hebrew and English and studied French in college. When I was in junior high, my mom read the entire English dictionary, from aardvark to zyzzyva (yup, that’s a word). My mom has reviewed all my blogs and probably found over 300 spelling, grammatical, or structural errors. She’s effectively served as the Flyte Fitness Editor-in-Chief.

In addition to my mom’s role in editing these blogs, she’s been a terrific role model for me when it comes to health and wellness.

Here Are 5 Reasons My Mom Is My Fitness Role Model:

1. She exercises regularly.
Bruce Lee said, “Long-term consistency trumps short term intensity.” My mom’s routine would make Lee proud. Nearly every day, my mom takes a big walk. She doesn’t stroll, she walks fast and with purpose. She doesn’t fear hills – and there are many towering ones near her house. She challenges herself and is consistent.

2. She is active around the clock.
My mom is the first person to play tag with her grandchildren… and often outlasts the energetic duo! She takes oft-considered mundane activities, such as gardening, and digs in deep with vigor and enthusiasm.

3. She eats clean. Very clean.
She has tremendous discipline and self-control when it comes to what she eats. And, if you ask her, she’ll tell you it’s because she truly enjoys healthy foods. Rather than playing a subordinate role to fatty entrees, kale, quinoa, beans, and fresh fruit are the entrees. And they’re incredibly tasty.

4. She is measured.
My mom has dabbled with extremes: she was a vegan for a decade. However, she generally has a very balanced approach to wellness. She supports her children’s and grandchildren’s activities, from running, to yoga, to gymnastics, to ballet, to ice skating. She encourages without pressuring, motivates without creating guilt trips. My mom emphasizes happiness and safety above all else, often reminding me to stretch properly after a long run or take it easy if I’m run down.

5. She’s non-judgmental.
She doesn’t push her lifestyle on others and is very accommodating. Exhibit A is the large piles of turkey and stuffing at the table every Thanksgiving dinner!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mothers out there. I hope this blog didn’t have too many grammatical errors as my mom didn’t edit it!
