“One’s philosophy is not best expressed in words; it is expressed in the choices one makes… and the choices we make are ultimately our responsibility.” - Eleanor Roosevelt
We make countless choices every day. We try to make the right choices. Today, our friend and partner, 10-year NFL veteran and Super Bowl Champion, Steve Weatherford, shares his thoughts on choices related to nutrition versus exercise, the kind of days that motivate him most, and a surprising interest he chooses to partake in often.
Pick one for someone who wants to get in shape: healthy nutrition or exercise?
Weatherford: “If you could only pick one, you can never out-exercise a bad diet. Nutrition is paramount. You can run 10 miles a day, but if you are putting carcinogens and unhealthy saturated fats in your body, you’re not going to be able to burn it off. But if you don’t work out at all and all you do is eat a super clean diet, you’ll be pretty healthy.”
On the surface, it may be surprising to those of you familiar with Steve’s massive physique, but the reality is that there is no way to see muscle without limiting body fat. More important than physical appearance, what we consume has an impact on our overall health and affects our ability to get maximum benefit from our workouts. Of course Steve doesn’t have to choose and he is laser-focused on both eating clean and working out religiously.
What kind of days give you the greatest sense of accomplishment?
Weatherford: “The tough ones. You’re going days where you come into the weight room where you’re weak, you don’t have energy, your joints hurt, you suck. But, to me, I get the most fulfillment from just tearing through a day where I just feel like crap. The feeling I get when I get done knowing I pushed through something that I didn’t want to do and didn’t think I could do… that feeling is so much better than when I wake up in the morning and think ‘I feel great today, I’m going to crush it!’ because mentally it’s so much more challenging.”
Steve is relentless with his workouts. He’s up early and in the gym for hours basically every day. As Steve says, “there are really two things you can control: attitude and effort.” Those tough days bring out the best in all of us and I think we can all relate to the feeling we get when we’ve finished something extraordinarily difficult.
What’s a hobby you have or an interest you like that would surprise people?
Weatherford: “I love to play house with my daughters. I genuinely enjoy it. I love to play dress up and have fashion shows and dance parties at my house. I genuinely enjoy playing Barbies with my daughters.”
No shock here, Steve. The obsession is clear! Steve is always doing fun things with his four kids. Check out his Instagram profile at @weatherford5.
